Advance tax is applicable if total tax liability after TDS exceeds ₹10,000 in the financial year. Senior citizens (60+) without business income are exempt from advance tax.
Section 234B: Interest at 1% per month if advance tax paid is less than 90% of assessed tax. Levied from April of AY to the month of assessment.
Section 234C: Interest at 1% per month for deferment of individual installments. Calculated on the shortfall for each quarter.

Yes, senior citizens (60 years or more) who do not have income from business or profession are exempt from advance tax. They can pay their entire tax as self-assessment tax when filing ITR.
