Advance tax is applicable if total tax liability after TDS exceeds ₹10,000 in the financial year. Senior citizens (60+) without business income are exempt from advance tax.

Interest on Non-Payment

Section 234B: Interest at 1% per month if advance tax paid is less than 90% of assessed tax. Levied from April of AY to the month of assessment.

Section 234C: Interest at 1% per month for deferment of individual installments. Calculated on the shortfall for each quarter.

Who needs to pay advance tax?

Any taxpayer whose total tax liability after TDS exceeds ₹10,000 in a financial year must pay advance tax. This includes salaried individuals with additional income like capital gains, interest or freelance income.

Are senior citizens exempt from advance tax?

Yes, senior citizens (60 years or more) who do not have income from business or profession are exempt from advance tax. They can pay their entire tax as self-assessment tax when filing ITR.

How to pay advance tax online?

Pay via the e-Filing portal → e-Pay Tax → Challan 280. Select tax type as "Advance Tax" and the applicable financial year. Payment can be made via net banking, debit card or UPI.
